Lesson 2
This lesson, though geared towards piano, is super important for communication with other musicians. Don’t worry about fully grasping the concept. The most important thing to understand when people are talking is understanding what they mean when they say “does the key of _ work for you?” Let’s break this down. A key is a musical term talking about all the notes found in that key. Majority of the time there are 7 main notes that fit within that key that repeat up the piano. When someone asks you if you can sing in a specific key it means, with your voice type and the octave you sing at will you be able to comfortably sing all the notes. Changing the key can shift where they start on the piano making it easier or harder to sing. This is where we get the term male and female keys. They literally don’t have any difference whatsoever in music theory but the keys that are put into these groups are generally determined that guys can sing better in these keys and girls sing better in the keys that are higher range when playing a specific octave. The pdf that may help better explain it. You can ignore page 3 those are all the notes in each key (more detail for the piano course). |
