Video explanation of head voice. This is a little higher, similar exercise but for the ladies.
This is a warm up that is super good for training your voice ~ 7 mins in the head voice starts but it has it all. (Sorry these are super annoying but are really helpful in training your voice.)

Lesson 6 - Head Voice
Head voice is a term vocalists use as a way of defining what your larynx is doing and where the vibrations are (or at least where you'd describe them to be). What is head voice? Head voice is the higher part of your range and contrary to what some unexperienced singers may say singing higher does not mean you are singing in falsetto. I have people comment, (people with almost most the same voice range as me) and say when they sing that specific part its in their falsetto when it should even be close to that. The difference isn't the always pitch but it's the way you deliver the sound that changes it from head voice into falsetto (with a few exceptions). Head voice you should be clear and not too whispery, there's still power but instead of feeling vibrations in your chest which we'll breakdown in a later lesson it's "in your head". When your singing falsetto your vocal folds don't get the same amount of contact as the head voice (usually due to too much air pressure) and they create gaps making the too light high note singing that doesn't sound good. Singing in head voice won't feel they same way for everyone but think of higher in the head and lower in the chest. An easy way to tell when you are no longer in your chest voice is if (starting from a low note and singing them ascending) your voice "cracks" or wavers think of yodeling switching from the power to something else. That's around where your head voice starts. Now when you first do this you will probably be in your falsetto, it takes practice to sing in your chest voice if you are a tenor you probably are able to sing in head voice somewhat. This is where practice comes in as well as breathing. your vocal folds (or chords) actually change slightly when singing Chest vs head voice so it will take time to learn how to quickly go low to high without cracking or going into head voice. |
